Steller Sea Lions live in the Pacific northwest. They can be found from San
Miguel Island in Southern California, north to Alaska, to the Sea of Okhotsk
near Japan.
The population is divided into two stocks with differences in DNA and population
trends being the determining factors. This division occurs just east of
Prince William Sound
at 144 W longitude. The western stock is seeing the larger decline in numbers
while the eastern stock is more stable.
