| Stone's Sheep | Home |
While traveling the AlCan Highway through British Columbia we
had a wonderful opportunity to spend a few weeks photographing the area around
Summit Lake and further north. This area abounds with wildlife as well as beautiful
landscapes.
One species that I found a great pleasure in photographing was the Stone's sheep
(Ovis dalli stonei). Stone's sheep are generally found in the upper 1/3 of British
Columbia and into parts of the Yukon. Many of the sheep found in the
Yukon are intermixed with their white cousins, Dall Sheep.Although Stone's sheep
are often called Dall sheep or white sheep, their coloring ranges from a dark
gray almost black to lighter shades of gray and brown.
Stone's sheep have a little heavier horn than Dall sheep and tend to be a heavier
animal. The name Stone's sheep comes from explorer Andrew Stone who brought
the first specimen to the US from B.C. in 1886.
